Board members serve without compensation and provide practical stewardship for the house, its property, and its mission.
Board responsibilities
What the Board does
The bylaws give the Board general management of Friendship House and control of its business affairs.
Mission and policy
Set rules and policies with prudence and due diligence, protect the purpose of Friendship House, and keep the premises safe and available for recovery.
Operations and property
Oversee the use of Friendship House property, hire or remove the Executive Director, and receive updates about employees and operations.
Finance and accountability
Oversee finances and records, make an annual financial report available, and report to regular members at the annual membership meeting.
Board structure
The bylaws provide for a nine-member Board. Three Board members are elected each year to three-year terms, and the Board may fill a vacancy for the remainder of an unexpired term.
Meetings
Regular Board meetings are generally held on the second Thursday of each month. The Board may reschedule or cancel a meeting, but must meet at least quarterly.
Meeting attendance
Board meetings are not general public meetings. Attendance is limited under the bylaws to invited people and representatives of steering committees of groups meeting at Friendship House.
Service
Serve the recovery community.
Serving on the Board is an opportunity to support the future of Friendship House through service, leadership, and practical stewardship.
Eligibility under the bylaws
A candidate for the Board must be a voting member and have at least two years of continuous sobriety. Voting privileges begin after six months of timely membership dues payment.
Friendship House especially values experience in nonprofit leadership, grant writing, finance or accounting, legal and governance work, facilities management, and community engagement.
Board members will
Provide leadership and strategic direction, attend regular meetings, participate on committees, support fundraising, and help keep Friendship House safe, accessible, and active.

Member accountability
Board members are elected by voting members.
The annual membership meeting is held each December on a date set by the Board. At that meeting, voting members elect Board members and receive reports from officers and committees.
Members may inspect membership and Board meeting minutes as provided by the bylaws. Notices of membership meetings are posted at Friendship House at least 30 days in advance.
